Silent Key: Harold Walworth N8HGW

Harold N8HGW passed away Wednesday, November 22 2017 where he was living in Bangor Michigan. He got his ham license in 1999. He was also the organizer of a car club in Bangor for many years. He liked motorcycles in his younger years and also liked fishing and boating on Lake Michigan. He was in the US Army. Harold had a heart transplant on 9-11-01.  He was doing fine until his kidneys quit in 2016 but he was making it work. His wife Trena was by his side for anything he needed. He is survived by a brother George Walworth. He had one daughter Karen and her husband Rick and two grandsons, who also live near them. A service will not be held until August of 2018 due to him being a heart transplant patient.

Silent Key: Doyle Bernath W8TGC

Doyle E. Bernath, age 93 of Wauseon, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2017, at Fulton Manor Nursing Home.   Doyle worked for Phillips 66 as a maintenance supervisor for many years and then was self-employed until his retirement.  He is also a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II.

Doyle was born in Hillsdale County, Michigan on October 15, 1924 to the late Andrew E. and the late Bessie I. (Grup) Bernath.  On June 27, 1948, he married Catherine S. Stutesman, and she survives.    He was a member of the Wauseon Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Amateur Radio Club.  Doyle also enjoyed golfing and fishing on Lake Erie. 

Besides his wife, Catherine, he is survived by many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Twila Stutz.

Dale Lavon Smith, age 73, of Hillsdale, Michigan, and formerly of Angola, Indiana, passed away on August 14, 2017, at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Dale was born on August 11, 1944 in Angola, Indiana, the son of DeBurl and Dorris J. (Sickels) Smith.

He attended Fremont and Angola High Schools and graduated in 1963.

He was an electrical technician and retired from Williams Electric in Angola, Indiana, and was currently working for Swick Broadcasting and Zip Spider Internet, Angola, Indiana.

Dale married Delberta (Dow) Pattison on December 10, 2006 in Hillsdale, Michigan.

He liked to spend his free time with amateur radio, and used the call sign W9LKI, he was a member of the Land of Lakes 101 radio club, and years ago was involved in Civil Defense, and helped to bring the 911 system to Steuben County.

Silent Key: Edgar Zysset N8HB

Edgar H. Zysset, age 89, of Perrysburg, Ohio, formerly of Swanton, Ohio, passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 14, 2017 at Waterford Assisted Living at Levis in Perrysburg.  He was born October 28, 1927 in Biel, Switzerland to the late Charles and Martha (Niederer) Zysset, and he served in the Swiss Army.

Mr. Zysset came to the United States in 1957 as a mechanical engineer, working the majority of his years at Crown Cork & Seal Company, Inc.  His success as a mechanical engineer led to him having multiple patents to his name, including the soda can pop tab (US 5232114 A).

While living in St. Cloud, Florida, Mr. Zysset was a member of the Society of Plastic Engineers and American Radio Relay League.  He moved to the Toledo, Ohio area in 1981, most recently residing in Swanton, where he was a member of the Fulton County Amateur Radio Club and Delta United Methodist Church.

Mr. Zysset is survived by his son, Charles (Sigrid) Zysset; daughters, Aimee Matheny and Marianne (John) Cante; as well as 6 grandchildren.

Silent Key: James Beck KC8DPM

James “Jim” Beck, age 79 of Wauseon passed away Thursday April 20, 2017 at the University of Toledo Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Prior to his retirement, he had worked for the City of Wauseon for many years. In retirement, he had volunteered with the Fulton County Senior Center, Sauder Village, and the Fulton County Historical Society.

Mr. Beck was born on August 9, 1937 in Toledo, the son of the late Ed and the late Nina (Krieger) Beck. On September 18, 1960 he married the former Anne Hyatt and she survives. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wauseon, the Wauseon F&AM #349, and the Wauseon American Legion Post. He was also a member of the Northwest Ohio Blacksmith Club. He was an amateur radio operator KC8DPM and a member of the Fulton County Amateur Radio Club. He held an Associate Degree in Manufacturing Technology from the University of Toledo and holds a Class III Waste Water Treatment license and a Class I Water Treatment license from the State of Ohio.

Silent Key: N8MI Dale Little

Dale G. Little, of Delta, Ohio, who for over 40 years answered to call sign “N8MI,” was called home on February 1, 2017, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.  Dale was born on March 23, 1938, in Jackson, Michigan, and grew up in Toledo, Ohio. He was a proud graduate of Irving E. Macomber High School. On September 20, 1958, he married Joann Burch and she survives. Dale had a very successful 40-year career with AT&T (formerly Ohio Bell), retiring in 1995. In retirement, Dale was able to enjoy his many hobbies. Of them all, he most loved traveling the country with his wife in their 30-foot fifth-wheel travel trailer. And of all the destinations, Lakeland, Florida, was the favorite. There, he was able to watch countless spring training games for his most beloved baseball team, the Detroit Tigers. When not long-distance traveling, Dale loved spending time at his Figy’s Point cottage on glorious Posey Lake (Hudson, Michigan). Dale was an avid golfer, fisherman and outdoorsman. He loved spending time in his professional woodworking shop, making furniture and cabinetry for his two homes.

Silent Key: Howard Slemp - N8VHX

Howard D. Slemp, age 80, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away peacefully, Thursday afternoon, June 25, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 2, 1935 in Saltville, Virginia to Howard Guy and Emma Mae (Tomlinson) Slemp. He graduated from Marion High School in Marion, Virginia in 1954. Howard enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  On November 8, 1955, he married his beloved wife, Dorothy Lee Stukey.  She preceded him in death on January 21, 2012.

Silent Key: Lifetime Member Kenny Alvord - KD8ERB

ARCADIA, Fla. -- Kenneth Richard Alvord, 81, of Arcadia, Fla., and Archbold, Ohio, passed away November 27, 2014, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte, Fla.

Ken was born June 25, 1933, in Chappell, Neb., the son of Clarence and Vesta Alvord. He moved to Ohio and married Clara Ann (Miller) Frey on June 18, 1952, and she survives. They made their home in Liberty Center until a few years ago. Recently, Ken and Clara spent their summers in Archbold, Ohio, and winters in Arcadia, Fla.

Ken is survived by six children, Clarence "Al" (Sharon) of Arcadia, Fla., Richard (Diane) of Napoleon, David (Nina) of Liberty Center, Cherie (David) Mercer of Wauseon, Jaynie (Tom) Gilgenbach of Archbold, and Laurie Ricker of Bryan; two sisters, Patty Kintz of Ogalla, Neb., and Garnet Roth of Republic, Mo.; sister-in-law, Yvonne Alvord of Sumter, Wash.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clarence "Buzz" Alvord; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
